What is longevity? Find out now!

We increasingly encounter this term in social media, articles, and advertisements: longevity. We have a rough idea of what it means, but what exactly does this word entail?

The term longevity originates from English and fundamentally means long lifespan or longevity. In scientific and medical contexts, it is often used to study the length of human life and refers to the factors that help someone live a longer, healthier life.

When do we start thinking about logevity?

When we are young, we don’t think about the passing years. However, as we approach our forties and fifties, or even cross these significant milestones, we increasingly ponder questions like:

  • How long will I live?
  • How long will I be healthy?
  • What support can I expect from my family and society in my old age?

It is a global phenomenon that the proportion of elderly people in society is increasing. This necessitates greater attention to the growing aging population and the resulting social, economic, health, and technological challenges.

In recent years, more and more research has focused on how to increase the number of healthy years, not just living longer but ensuring that old age is spent in the best possible health.

The goal of longevity research is to understand and improve the factors influencing human lifespan, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Lifestyle (diet, exercise, stress management)
  • Healthcare and technological advancements
  • Environmental impacts

Research also delves into exciting questions like:

What is the difference between chronological and biological age? How can biological age be accurately measured? What does our DNA and microbiome reveal? Is aging a disease, and if so, will there ever be a cure? Is lifespan or quality of life the more important goal? Is aging truly the cause of most of our diseases? Can we really influence how we age? How can we consciously use our lifestyle, nutrition, natural and artificial substances to influence our health, either to speed up or slow down aging?

In summary, the goal of longevity research is to ensure not just a longer but a healthier life for us, so it is worth paying attention to our lifestyle and the latest scientific findings.
